Hyundai is committed to creating a greener Ireland.

Technically they are - but in a limited manner. During deceleration (breaking or downhill driving), kinetic energy generated by the electric motor charges the battery. However, without a petrol engine to drive the car, no regeneration can take place. The electricity harvested can reduce your petrol consumption by up to 20%, depending on your driving style. Typical hybrids can travel in full EV mode at low speeds of 5 to 15kph for distances of 5 to 12 km. Motorways or long commutes do not suit hybrids and you may in fact get better fuel economy from diesel engines.

If you typically drive up to 400 km per day, an IONIQ 5 with a range of up to 507 km or a Kona Electric with a range of up to 484 km may currently be the right choice for you. Consider also that most EV owners charge overnight in their driveway, giving them a full charge in the morning at a 70%-80% saving on petrol and diesel costs. Petrol or hybrid engines may suit you for lower mileage driving if you don’t have access to a driveway for charging an electric car or don’t want to rely on public charging points or perhaps simply aren’t yet ready to make the move to electric.

With the latest Euro 6 technology and lower emissions, diesel engines are greener than ever before. If you do a lot of motorway or long-distance driving, diesel may be the best option for you. The latest diesel engines are much more efficient than in the past, outperforming many petrol or hybrid engines. With all engine types available, our Hyundai Dealers can advise on which option works best for your needs.
